Hippo Puzzle

What's more fun than a jigsaw puzzle? - An original one-of-a-kind artwork on a jigsaw puzzle! Functional or interactive art is always a hit with our students. This time we drew hippos on the water.

First we drew our hippos in the foreground, then the middle ground and background. Then we colored in the drawing. Rings of different shades of blues, greens and whites imply movement of the animals in the water.

Sunsets, rainbows, trees and plants were added by our little artists.

Learning where and how to leave white and lighter colors as highlights is a challenge, but the kids were so proud of themselves for learning how to do it effectively.

One of the most gratifying steps in making a drawing on a puzzle is the last one; tearing it up and
putting it all back together again!

Printmaking: Lion!

At the West Lafayette Public Library we learned about the printmaking process and made exciting, vividly colored lions!  The kids learned the basic principals of layering color in reverse, using a limited palette, transferring an image onto another surface and basic print reproduction techniques. We used foam, Speedball ink, and printed our image on colored paper. Complimentary and analogous color schemeswere chosen and arranged by the students on the paper they selected.
The foam print can be reused over and over on fun items such as gift bags.
